How many years ago was that lake a mountain?

During three days in 1912, Mount Katmai disappeared, sinking inward and leaving behind a crater. Novarupta, a stadium-size crumbcake, erupted ash about six miles away. Was the largest eruption of the 20th century, and created the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. John Eichelberger, pictured, has led groups there for years around summer solstice. He explains how the area became a northern desert while bagging volcanic peaks in his spare time.
