The big chill
Hey.
My first post on this brand new medium. Welcome, and I'm glad you found me.
I'm sitting in Fairbanks, Alaska, where I live, looking out at dry snow being spit from a cold, cold sky. It's about 10 below now, not an absurd temp for March 3rd, but we in Fairbanks haven't sniffed zero degrees SINCE FEBRUARY 15th. That's sixteen subzero days in a row.
I know. I live in Fairbanks. What do I expect? But this is a bit squirreley even for here, where our average high temp this time of year is close to 10 degrees. Temperatures for late February here were nearly 30 degrees below average.
Don't get me wrong, I loves winter. But I'm a skier, and to glide skiers need temps above the zero mark. This cold is forcing me to become a runner. (Which I enjoy, even though I have to slip my feet in plastic grocery bags before they go into my sneakers).
Enough o' my yakkin. We got the sun, the undeniable sun, coming back. Soon, on the 21st or so, we will have the same amount of light as Tampa. From there, we start kicking butt. It's just a matter of time. As my Mom used to say, "God give me strength and patience."

Vickie @ 5:10 pm:
While taking the shuttle to Prudhoe Bay Hotel, Matt (the shuttle driver) told us about "Walking my Dog Jane". I read most of the book walking a treadmill… definately not the same walk!!
However, reading your March 3 2007 "the big chill" article reminded me that when we arrived at Prudhoe Bay Hotel, we were freezing in JUNE. When the workers looked at us in amazement, we just explained, "We're from Florida. When it gets below 70 degrees (F) we build fires in the fire place!" Needless to say, when we woke up the next morning, we were sweating!
Of course, I still had an extremely hard time boarding the flight back to the lower 48. Hoping to return again to visit the Alaska I missed last summer.
